Cataract

Term is used to describe the clouding of natural lens of the eye.Vision dims because cataract prevent light from passing beyond the lens and focus on the retina.

Symptoms:

1.Painless blurring of vision
2.Glare
3.Frequent change in eyeglass prescription
4.Poor night vision
5.Double vision in one eye
6.Fading colour

Cause:

1. Most common cause is due to ageing and referred to as senile cataract.
2. Family history
3. Diabetic cataract
4. Cataract due to long term use of medication.
5. Congenital cataract
6. Previous eye surgery.

How is cataract detected:

1. Through an eye examination by an ophthalmologist
2. Slit-lamp examination
3. Fundus examination

Cataract Surgery:

It is a day care,microscopic surgery performed under local anesthesia or topical anaesthesis. Cloudy lens is removed leaving its posterior capsule behind within which permanent artificial intraocular lens is implanted. However in layman’s terms today modern cataract surgery is called as the laser cataract surgery as there are no stitches although there is no actual use of laser. Cataract is dissolved using ultrasound waves from an equipment and is medically termes phacoemulsification.cataract removal by phacoemulsification is Surgery as choice.
